New Year, New Priorities

Focus for the year

Hi Reader,

Unless you have some big team, or a really big budget, you’ll be pretty limited on the things you can achieve this year in your marketing. I’m sure you’re not short on ideas though so that’s where the focus comes in. It’s how you decide what is and isn’t even on the radar, and what to prioritise when you only have time for half your to do list.

The thing you choose might be the one you enjoy most, or the one that you believe will have the biggest impact. It might be what worked most for you last year, or even something that will hopefully better set you up for 2025. This week’s episode of the podcast is all about finding that focus.

I like to choose a phrase of the year (I explain more about why in the episode) and for the last few years, I’ve been able to choose something that fits all areas of my life.

Last year, my phrase was “Less is More”. I was able to downsize my belongings, focus on the key elements of my health after getting a real diagnosis, I reduced my service menu, and was able to focus on fewer platforms in my marketing. I obviously did other things, but that was my focus, almost every day.

I choose my focus for the year based on how I want to work, and where I want to be putting my energy. Naturally, I want that energy to make the next year simpler, and to create something that is fun, and works for me.

Here are some questions I like to think about when choosing my focus:

  • Where do I want to be in a year? What’s different about that situation that isn’t happening now?
  • What pieces of the steps towards that goal can I control?
  • What have I already done in the past that I can re-use or share to help me towards my goals?
  • What do each of my action items have in common?
  • Can I summarise that into a simple phrase or word that I can remind myself of throughout the year?

A lot of the time I also choose a monthly focus. That might not always relate to the phrase of the year, but is descriptive of the focus for those coming weeks. That means I can have a few different focuses throughout the year, almost like side-quests, but I find that limiting the time period to focus on that side-quest keeps me more on track and productive overall.

I’d love to hear all about what you have planned for the new year, what you want to focus on, and if you’ve chosen a word or phrase of the year, so hit reply and tell me all about it!

Go your own way Hi Reader Since Honey Pot Digital was just the spark of an idea, my mission was to help small business owners better understand and take action in their marketing. The idea was sparked when I saw a client I was working with get swindled by their ad agency. Specifically, they got a photo done for a campaign they were doing with the business I worked for. The photo was curated to their brand, kinda, but it was missing one key element. The PRODUCT. Not only did they charge them,...

Does that new idea fit into your plan? Hi Reader, One of the things I touched on in this week’s podcast episode was “What does YOUR marketing need?” Sometimes, you can’t be so confident about what is right for you, and your target audience. Maybe you chose your focus for the year, and made a whole list of tasks to work on, but things will inevitably come up through the year as ideas or options. In any brand, there is the grey area, the unexplored territory. You don’t yet know how much time...

Perception is reality The stories around our businesses dictate how we speak about them, and in turn how others both relate to them and tell new people. You get to write part of that story... Hi Reader, Combining what you offer, who you offer it to, why, how and the journey along the way is one story. That’s the story of how you and your business got to where you are now, and what you hope to achieve in the future. In sharing that story, it allows people to better understand the brand and how...
