Turning marketing mistakes into valuable lessons

Mistakes fuel mastery

Like I shared in this week's podcast, truly wasted time is when you keep doing the thing, even when you know it isn't necessary.

Hi Reader,

We’ve all been there. Putting a lot of effort (and time) into a marketing campaign, only to see that it doesn’t get the traction you hoped for. When things don’t work out, it’s natural to feel frustrated or even critical of yourself. But here’s the thing: Marketing mistakes don’t define you. They’re an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve your strategy.

Instead of letting self-criticism take over, or feeling stuck, try shifting your perspective to focus on what you can learn from the situation.

Separate the mistake from your identity

Mistakes are a normal part of the process and don’t mean you’re failing. They simply show you where adjustments need to be made. Remember, you’re always growing as a marketer. What matters is how you respond to the challenge.

Analyse without judgment

Look at the mistake objectively. What specifically didn’t work? Was it the messaging, timing, targeting, or something else? By identifying the root cause (or potential causes) of its downfall, you can pinpoint where changes need to happen rather than assuming the failure includes every aspect of the campaign, or a personal shortcoming.

Focus on learning

Every marketing mistake is a chance to refine your skills. Ask yourself, “What can I do differently next time?” Maybe it’s testing new strategies, adjusting your approach, or learning more about your audience. The key is to move forward with the knowledge you’ve gained, rather than dwelling on what went wrong.

Celebrate your effort to improve

Taking risks and trying new things in your marketing shows that you’re invested in your growth. Even when a campaign doesn’t go as planned, you’re gaining valuable insights that will lead to better decisions down the road.

This pause will help you to get back onto the path, rather than create a whole new one from scratch.

Marketing is an evolving process, and each step gets you closer to understanding what works best for your business, whether it’s a success or a mistake.

Better luck (and strategy) next time!

On the podcast this week...

I shared a bit about why I've taken some time off, and what I'm doing to make things easier on myself. You might find you can learn something from my mistakes.

Big Goals Need A Plan Your dreams won't chase themselves Hi Reader,It’s been a while since I sent an email, but all is well here! I have a podcast episode coming up that will delve into the details of what I've been up to, but today I wanted to share one of the things I have been putting back into practice over the past few months. When working towards any goal, I use a tried and true process to break things down into a loop I can close. It’s one that I’ve also used with most of my clients...

Go your own way Hi Reader Since Honey Pot Digital was just the spark of an idea, my mission was to help small business owners better understand and take action in their marketing. The idea was sparked when I saw a client I was working with get swindled by their ad agency. Specifically, they got a photo done for a campaign they were doing with the business I worked for. The photo was curated to their brand, kinda, but it was missing one key element. The PRODUCT. Not only did they charge them,...

Does that new idea fit into your plan? Hi Reader, One of the things I touched on in this week’s podcast episode was “What does YOUR marketing need?” Sometimes, you can’t be so confident about what is right for you, and your target audience. Maybe you chose your focus for the year, and made a whole list of tasks to work on, but things will inevitably come up through the year as ideas or options. In any brand, there is the grey area, the unexplored territory. You don’t yet know how much time...
